I live in an area, wherein traffic problem seems to be spiralling. Umpteen number of petitions and requests put forth to the concerned authorities have been in vain.
However, I am able to find that such bottlenecks are in the rise only over the past decade, for before which, roads were pretty accommodative to both vehicles as well as pedestrians. The scenario now has changed upside down and pedestrians are shoved to have a run for their space on the road.
High disposable incomes with the booming IT culture, has definitely encouraged even the upper middle classes to take their peak into luxury. This has obviously led to the increase in the number of automobiles on the road.
While it is the automobile industry which is riding high on the tide, the poor pedestrians and other road users are left to their misery.
I personally feel that the authorities should wake up to the situation and act accordingly. Parameters for the provision of driving licence should be made stringent.
We come across scores of PSAs (Public Service Announcements) on health issues etc. Maybe the government can actually promote PSAs on strategies such as car pooling, the usage of public transport etc. Though this may not be abided by readily, atleast it would save the situation from falling out of the frying pan into the fire.
