For those lovely long nails
  • Eat healthy. For a healthy pinkish glow, you need lots of protein. If you have weak and soft nails, drink milk regularly.
  • To spur growth, massage your nails with warm almond oil and push the cuticles back daily.
  • Dip in lemon juice or vinegar at night to strengthen your nails.
  • Never clip nails to shorten them. Use an emery board to file nails down to size.
  • Remove polish the night before a manicure and apply petroleum jelly on your nails and cuticles.
  • Apply a topcoat almost daily to help protect the tips.
  • Use nail polish remover sparingly. Especially the ones containing acetone for this will dry your nails. If you have to use remover, smother your nails with moisturiser afterwards.
  • Apply hand cream or lotion after washing hands since soaps tend to cause dryness of nails and skin. Try applying vaseline or moisturiser before going to bed.
  • Never try to peel or scrape off nail polish or use metal instruments on the nail surface to push back the cuticles. This can scrape off the protective cells of the nail surface.
  • Of course, no nail biting. In the long run, it will deform your nails.
  • Push back the cuticle gently with a rosewood stick or rubber-tipped cuticle pusher. If the cuticle is hard, try trimming it slightly. Take care not to remove the whole cuticle.
  • Toenails should be clipped straight across. Soften nails by soaking them in water before cutting them.
  • Never shape your nails by cutting with a nail cutter. Clip them straight across and smoothen the corners with an emery file. Avoid using metal file. Always file in the same direction.
  • Since feet are highly susceptible to nail fungus (they are covered by shoes, which provides a dark and moist place for the bacteria to thrive), clean them quite often. Change your socks daily.
  • For ingrown nails, remove them softly. If it is deeply embedded, then consult a beautician. Do not dig too deeply.
