We need to exfoliate our skins to gently remove dead cells on the surface. These cells clog pores and make our skin look dull.

Abrasives like scrubs and brushes are normally used for exfoliation. Sometimes people also use chemical peels for this.

It's Important to Remember a Few Basic Rules While Using Exfoliates.

  • Exfoliated skin is more prone to sunburn. Always make it a point to use sunscreen when you go out, if you use scrubs regularly.
  • Use gentle pressure while exfoliating with a brush. Or you could damage your skin.
  • Brushes must always be kept clean and dry. Or they could harbour bacteria that will be passed onto your body.
  • There are different scrubs that are suitable for different parts of your body. Use them appropriately. Don't use a body scrub on your face and vice versa.
  • Always moisturise your face after scrubbing it. Apply moisturiser when your skin is still wet. It is better absorbed.
  • If your moisturiser stings when you apply it, it means you've used too much scrub. Don't use it again for a few days. The next time, choose a gentler one if possible.
  • People who use Retin A should not use scrubs.

  • Some scrubs like those made of nuts of fruit seeds have coarse or jagged ends. Such scrubs can tear the cells on your face and really damage them. Round poly vinyl beads or oatmeal are less abrasive and much gentler on your face. They are better recommended. Many people inadvertently buy scrubs made from natural products - thinking they are safer. But it isn't always that way with scrubs.
  • Never use scrubs if you have sensitive skin. It could cause a severe allergy.
  • If you're beginning to react adversely to a scrub, see a dermatologist. Take your scrub along so your doctor can check exactly what the ingredients are.
