Maybe not all of us are happy with the kind of hair we have. Some of us prefer straight fine hair, others prefer glorious curls that would save them the trouble of maintaining a perm. And we're often stuck with the wrong kind.
But irrespective of the kind of hair we have, we should keep it as healthy as possible. What are some of the basic steps involved in keeping hair healthy and preventing damage?
Remember, healthy hair always shines. If hair is dull, brittle or very dry - it needs extra care.
Use a mild shampoo when washing your hair. Harsh shampoos can strip your hair of its natural oils. Hair need not be washed more than twice a week - unless it gets extra dirty or you're treating it for dandruff.
Use the kind of shampoo your hair needs. Coloured or streaked hair needs a specific shampoo. People with dandruff need an anti dandruff shampoo. By using the right shampoo, you give your hair just the kind of treatment it deserves at that point of time. Don't use baby shampoo unless your doctor or beautician specifically suggests it.
If you have dry hair brushing it vigorously could damage it. Instead use a wide toothed comb to remove the knots and maintaining it that way. Dry hair needs to be massaged with hot oil at least once a week.
Hair should always be kept well conditioned and protected from the vagaries of weather. A leave-in conditioner after washing your hair, or a few drops of oil when it is dry will help your hair be healthy and glossy. Use olive or almond oil that is easily absorbed by the hair - and doesn't look greasy or lank.
The mistake most people make is to brush wet hair. This weakens hair considerably. Air-dry your hair as much as possible. Use your towel gently like a blotting paper. Don't rub your hair briskly with the towel. And don't use hair dryers unless you can help it. Hair dryers used indiscreetly and too often will damage the very texture of your hair.
Dyeing, colouring, streaking, perming or straightening our hair too often will result in hair loss and will spoil the texture of your hair. Natural rinses and colours don't cause too much damage.
Treating your hair well will make all the difference to its health in the long run.
