People often talk about a perfect nose, but the truly perfect nose is one that suits your face. The nose job was the first cosmetic operation to really grab popular attention. Unlike the facelift, which swung into the spotlight a short time later, it is performed on people of all ages. Although there are some misconceptions about rhinoplasty, particularly about how it is done, the operation essentially changes the shape and size of a nose - which might be big or misshapen (possibly due to being broken).

There are many difficult things which can be achieved with rhinoplasty – bumps removed, tips altered, shortening, refining – but you should really have it done before your 20s or 30s. There is no pain as such (although it will probably look painful!), but you will feel numbness and you will need to wear a plaster cast for a few days. Although it can take up to six months for the final swelling to go down, you will begin to see what you new nose looks like after about six weeks.

In rare cases, like severely injured or very crooked noses, a second operation is needed sometimes. As the operation is carried out through the nostrils, there is no facial scarring. Don't wear specs for the first six weeks. Don't do exercise for the first four weeks and avoid sports like rugby and football for six months.

It is advisable to rest as much as possible and that includes the period in which the plaster is on. If you don't mind people seeing you with your bandages and if you feel up to it, then you can gently work after a week, but do avoid too much physical contact.
