Home » Types of Back Pain
It’s quite a difficult task to identify and diagnose the types of back pain as it is important to learn also how to control and treat it. Different types of back pain have different causes of back pain and thus also have different methods and procedures involved for treatment. Although for research and medical purposes back pain is categorized into three types, viz. acute pain, chronic pain, and neuropathic pain; types of back pain can be more than these three. Here we will inform you about four back pain types, they are: acute back pain, chronic back pain, specific low back pain, and non-specific low back pain.
Acute Back Pain is one of the most common types of back pain that is defined as pain that lasts less than 3 to 6 months, or back pain that is related directly to the damage of tissues. In this kind of back pain, the pain experienced is similar to a needle prick or a paper cut. The other inflammatory instances of the type of pain experienced from acute back pain are like touching a hot iron or stove, labor pains, or the finger getting smashed by a hammer.
The longer the pain persists, the more susceptible it is to other type of influences and lead to the development of a chronic back pain problem. These other influences can include things like the ongoing signal of pain input to the nervous system without causing damage of tissues, physical de-conditioning takes place from the lack of exercise, emotional factors like anxiety, stress or depression, and a person’s thoughts about pain.
In case of Chronic Back Pain, there are two different types of chronic back pain problems at least. One type of chronic pain occurs due to an identifiable pain generator, for example an injury or any other accidents. The other type of chronic back pain takes place due to no identifiable pain generator, like the injury has healed. The first type of chronic back pain happens due to a cause that is clearly identifiable. This can include certain structural spine conditions like spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and spondylolisthesis. This pain type continues beyond the point of tissue healing and is frequently termed as “chronic benign pain”. In case of Specific Low Back Pain, which is a type of chronic back pain only, the cause of the back pain can be determined or specified. In case of Non-Specific Low Back Pain, the cause of the back pain remains undetermined.
