Back pain is perhaps one of the most common that people all over the world are facing. Back strains and sprains are one of the specific conditions of back pain that has gained the attention of the doctors and the general practitioners recently.Usually our back and spinal cord with nerves, bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage and ligaments is a complicated structure to deal with. The lumbar region or the lower portion of the back is mainly responsible for carrying the weight of the body especially when you are running, walking or lifting something. Hence if your lower back is injured then you may have to experience back strains and sprains.

What are strains and sprains

Strain may be caused if your tendon or muscle is injured. The fibrous bands that are tough in nature and connect muscles with bones are known as tendons. Back strains may occur if these muscles or tendons get twisted or torn. The fibrous bands that connect one bone with another at the joints are called ligaments. If these ligaments are stretched or are torn then you may experience sprain.

Symptoms of back strains and sprains

You will have pain during back strains and sprains. This pain tends to increase when you move sideways or backwards. You may also feel sudden contraction in your muscle. You may have certain difficulties in walking, bending sideways or standing erect.

Causes of back strains and sprains

If your muscles or tendons get twisted due to some reason then you may feel back strains and sprains. Most of the time strains are caused due to lifting of heavy objects. Improper posture of sitting may also cause sprains. Sometimes you may receive a blow as a result of which your joints may move out of their places. If the ligaments are stretched beyond the normal rangr then there is a possibility of having sprains. Sometimes too much of carving of the back or presence of abdominal muscles may result in back strains and sprains. Sudden gain in weight or tight hamstings are also responsible for back strains and sprains. Strains and sprains on the back are quite common with the sports persons especially those playing soccer and are engaged in weightlifting.

Diagnosis of back strains and sprains

A milder form of back strains and sprains is easily diagnosed by a careful analysis of the symptoms and injury received. However in certain cases the doctors may have to take the help of X-rays.

Treatment of back strains and sprains

If you have a mild strain then the doctors will ask you to take complete bed rest. The doctors will try to reduce the spasm by application of pressure and ice packs. You may also have to take some anti-imflammatory drugs like Motrin. If you want to avoid back strains and sprains then have a healthy diet and have some freehand exercises regularly. Keep a check on your weight. Avoid lifting weights and stop smoking. If you have a back strain then instead of wasting time consult your house physician immediately.
