Spinal Disc Herniation is one of the causes of back pain that occur as the spinal discs degenerate and grow thinner. In such as condition the central portion of the spinal disc protrudes out of the central cavity pushing against a nerve root. With age intervertebral discs begin to degenerate and the condition is more pronounced in adults over 30 years. There are various terms used to describe spinal disc pathology and associated back pain.

Doctors and healthcare practitioners use terms such as pinched nerve or bulging disc along with Spinal Disc Herniation. It is the spinal nerves close to the edge of these spinal discs that causes the back pain. To appreciate the meaning of spinal disc herniation, it is important to understand how the discs on our back functions. The discs are between the vertebrae of the back and help to offer cushioning between the bones.

Spinal discs are made up of hard materials on the exterior, with a soft portion called the nucleus pulposus found inside. Spinal Disc Herniation is a serious condition that can significantly have an effect on the way that you lead your life. The problem causes excruciating back pain which persist for a long time. When spinal disc herniation occurs, the external portion of the disc, called annulus fibrosus is torn. The tear in the hard exterior causes some of the inner nucleus pulposus to fall outside of its hard exterior. This causes the nucleus pulposus to rub against the spinal cord and the nerves encircling it resulting in immense pain of the sufferer. Herniation of spinal disc mostly tends to strike inside the lumbar discs or cervical discs.

Excessive stress in people over thirty years of age is one of the causes of spinal disc herniation. The condition can also be caused due to lifting heavy objects and repetitive movements like twisting the back. Some of the symptoms related to Spinal Disc Herniation include back pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness. Depending on the site of the herniated disc, and the tissues involved the pain experienced by the victim often be different. In some instances of herniated discs the victim may also become paralyzed. Therefore, it is imperative to consult a doctor if have a back pain and suspect a case of Spinal Disc Herniation. The method used to determine whether or not a person has herniated discs include X-rays, computed tomography scans and Magnetic resonance imaging. There are many treatment options for Spinal Disc Herniation such as physical therapy and massage therapy among others. Minor cases of herniated discs generally heal by themselves after a period of six weeks or so. Doctors recommend lots of rest and relaxation to person with minor case of disc Herniation. For severe case surgery may be required to correct the discs positioning.
