If a doctor feels that a baby is affected with seizure, an electrocardiogram which is better known as the EEG, is done to check. It is a painless process where small electrodes are placed on the baby's head to measure and record brain waves.
There are many more tests that can be done to check the possibility of seizure in a baby. Head ultrasound can be also done to look for bleeds and other seizure problems in baby. Spinal tap test helps in diagnosing any infection in the spinal fluid or brain tissue. Blood tests and CT scan are also done to check the other sections of the body.
Seizure in babies is no doubt a major disease that needs immediate treatment. The treatment has to be in accordance to the cause as high seizures can result in breathing problems and heart problems. Apart from medicine, other things that should be done in seizure babies are as follows:
Proper care at home
Regular blood tests to see the need of change in medicine dose
Consult your doctor before giving medicine. Phenobarbital liquid is the most commonly used medicine for seizures in babies.
If a baby is found to be affected with seizure, the parents should maintain their calm in taking care of the baby. If the parents get tensed and stressed, it may have adverse effects. Make sure you follow the below stated points when a baby is infected with seizure:
Be calm.
Turn him on his side.
Suction baby if he vomits.
Do not put anything in his mouth. He cannot bite or swallow his tongue.
Do not leave baby alone.
Do not try to stop him from jerking. This will stop by itself and does not hurt your baby.
Do not give over-the-counter medicines or extra seizure medicine.
