Ideal Diet for Babies(0-12 months)

As the nutritional requirements of a baby are different from adults, one should pay special attention while feeding her baby. For first three months, mother`s milk is the best food for a new born. As mother milk is free from any contamination or adulteration, it is the suitable food for a baby. Doctors recommend mother`s milk for a new born as it contain all needed nutrients or minerals in almost correct amounts. It is believed that other than a rich source of all nutrients, mother`s milk contain some protective proteins called immunoglobins that protect a child against all infections.

As lactating mothers have a big responsibility of feeding their baby, they should eat a well-balanced diet, rich in all nutrients and minerals such as iron. Until 3 months of age, baby get iron in sufficient quantity from mother`s milk but after that iron has to be supplemented. Babies who feed on breast milk are less vulnerable to allergies or other serious infections, thus, up to 3 months, only mother milk should be given to babies. After the 3rd month the baby diet chart changes from breast milk to breast milk with some solid food. Now, mothers can start giving some solid food such as cereal food to their babies.

Soft and meshed food should be given to babies in between 3-6 months. Introduce new food during lunch or dinner and keep giving the same food to the baby for around a week or more so that he get used to it. Solid food items must be properly cooked and meshed before giving it to the baby so that he can easily eat it. It might be possible that your baby may suffer from indigestion when you first start giving him solid food that is quite normal. You can give him rice, khichdi and other soft food such as soups, strained vegetables and fruits, but the food should not be spicy. Breast feeding should be continued along with other food stuffs. By the end of 5 months your baby should weigh almost double from the time he was born.

Babies with 6 months of age get fond of solid food and they start eating almost everything such as cereals and raw fruits or vegetables. In this age babies should be encouraged to eat by themselves during plays. Babies are likely to develop their teeth during this period, thus problems such as loose motions and bad stomach would be quite frequent. Irritating gums would tend them to put everything in mouth and chewing every article would become a habit of babies, so mothers should keep a watch on them. Also their diet need to be well-planned during this period.

Help your baby in eating all vegetables and pulpy fruits gradually. By the end of 10 months, you can even help them eating eggs, non-vegetarian food, as well as other food stuffs. A mix diet and breast milk can help your baby grow in the proposed way so give everything as per his requirements and age.
