Ayurved and Arthritis

According to the ayurvedic schools of medication, arthritis is basically caused by an increased amount of toxin known as ama and deficiency of agni or the digestive fire. These two physiological problems can occur due to improper digestion and a subverted colon, leading to the accumulation of undigested food. Treatment related to Ayurved and arthritis deals with the arousal of the digestive fire or agni and the prevention of ama.

The ayurvedic ways of healthcare treat arthritis by categorizing the disease into three types, based on the functioning of pitta, vata and kapha. Since ayurvedic treatment lays tremendous emphasis on intuitive diagnosis, it is of paramount importance to find out which element is responsible for the development of arthritis. Only then the disease can be treated successfully.

Ayurved and Arthritis: the Role of Vata
If the body joints show signs of popping and cracking, it can be safely said that vata is responsible for arthritis. The joints become dry but they may not be bloated.

Ayurved and Arthritis: the Role of Pitta
Pitta-type arthritis is distinguished from other classes of arthritis by burning sensations.
It is normally extremely painful as the joints tend to swell up due to increased accumulation of pitta.

Ayurved and Arthritis: the Role of Kapha
Unlike the pitta-type arthritis, kapha-type arthritis is characterized by stiffness in the joints. It feels rather damp if you touch the joint. Making movement of the limb tends to ease up the pain.

In Ayurveda, the treatment of arthritis is primarily based on the patient`s eating habits and lifestyle. The doctors at first estimate the amount of pitta, kapha and vata in the body and see if there is any imbalance. The treatment of arthritis is oriented at evening up the inconsistent patterns of these three doshas. It helps in the reduction of the harmful toxins and improves digestion.

Ayurvedic means try to eliminate ama from the colon. Many ayurvedic doctors prescribe 1 teaspoon of Triphala before retiring to bed. It is believed to be a perfect remedy for the total healing of arthritis. Normally Haritaki is prescribed for vata-type arthritis, Bibbitaki for kapha-type arthritis and Amalaki for pitta-type arthritis.

Ayurveda does not encourage the arthritis patients to take spicy foods or herbs. Those who are susceptible to developing arthritis should refrain from rich diets. Detoxification diets are also prescribed for arthritis-affected individuals. Fruit juices, vegetables and a few select herbs are prescribed as detoxification diets. Consuming a lot of water helps increase the appetite and digestion.

The use of herbal oil is a reliable means of medication for the ayurvedic treatment of virtually every disease. It can rejuvenate the mind and the body by relieving pain and cramp. Oil massage also regulates the circulation of blood.
