Known as a premier exponent of the Pandanallur style classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, Alarmel Valli has won many accolades over the years for her distinction and creativity in the dance form. She founded the center for fine arts Dipashikha in Chennai in the year 1984. She is the second youngest Indian dancer (after Vyjayanthimala) to have been conferred the Padma Sri.
